IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert Across 25 Indian States Till May 7

New Delhi, India — May 5, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red and orange alert across multiple Indian states as severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, continue to lash various regions. A total of 25 states are expected to be impacted by inclement weather until May 7, raising concerns over public safety and potential disruptions.

Widespread Rainfall and Thunderstorms Sweep North to South India

Early morning showers accompanied by dust storms were reported in several areas on May 5, leaving roads waterlogged and visibility low. Northern states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan experienced heavy downpours, with commuters seeking shelter as gusty winds swept across urban and rural areas alike. While the rains brought relief from soaring summer temperatures, the abrupt weather shift has also posed risks of flooding and infrastructure damage.

Heavy rain and thunderstorm alerts are currently active for:

• North and Central India: Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Rajasthan

• Eastern India: Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal

• Southern India: Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and Goa

• Northeastern India: Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh

• Western India: Maharashtra and Gujarat

Severe Weather Outlook for May 5 and 6

According to IMD forecasts, heavy rainfall is expected today, May 5, in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Uttarakhand. Thunderstorms and lightning may affect Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, while Madhya Pradesh could experience strong winds along with rain.

On May 6, strong thunderstorms and wind gusts are predicted in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh. The IMD has issued fresh heavy rainfall warnings for Karnataka and Kerala, extending to parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

IMD Forecast for May 7: Hailstorms and Rain in Multiple States

Looking ahead, the IMD warns that rain and hailstorms may strike regions of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and parts of South India on May 7, including heavy precipitation in the Northeast, particularly Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during severe storms, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow regional disaster management instructions. Farmers and outdoor workers are also urged to take precautions due to the risk of crop damage and lightning-related incidents.
