Just hours before welcoming Canada’s prime minister to the White House, US President Donald Trump took to social media with a message claiming America doesn’t need anything from its neighbour.
Posting on Truth Social ahead of Mark Carney’s arrival on Tuesday, Trump said, “I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidising Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?” He added, “We don’t need their Cars, we don’t need their Energy, we don’t need their Lumber, we don’t need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain.”
Trump further claimed his question about the necessity of US-Canada ties “will be, most likely, my only question of consequence.” The remarks stood in contrast to long-standing trade and defence ties, as economic data shows the United States heavily relies on Canadian oil, energy and key goods. Cross-border trade has long contributed to affordable prices and economic growth for both countries.
Tensions have been growing as Trump continues to push the idea of turning Canada into the “51st state.” In a recent interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, he referred to the US-Canada border as an “artificial line” and spoke of combining the two nations into a “beautiful country.”
Trump has also put high tariffs on Canadian products like lumber, oil, and car parts. These moves have hurt the long friendship between the two countries and made many Canadians upset. Carney’s victory was seen as a reaction to this, as voters supported a leader who promised to stand up for Canada’s independence.
Mark Carney, a former central banker who led both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, was recently elected prime minister after his Liberal Party staged a surprise comeback.
