How Trump thwarted two female would-be presidents

In a recurring pattern spanning eight years, another female candidate for US president from the Democratic party has fallen short, with gender playing a significant role in the campaign narrative.

Similar to Hillary Clinton 's experience in 2016, Kamala Harris 's bid to become the first female occupant of the Oval Office ended in defeat.

Whilst their opponent Donald Trump 's personality significantly influenced these historic losses, numerous analysts identified misogyny as a contributing factor.

Harris and Trump presented contrasting perspectives regarding women's position and entitlements in their respective campaigns.

Trump, who has consistently denied multiple sexual assault allegations, projected an intensely masculine persona, associating with MMA fighters and expressing admiration for authoritarian global leaders.

His campaign team and he made several statements that drew criticism for being disrespectful towards women.

He described Harris as "crazy" and "mentally disabled", suggesting she would be "like a play toy" for international leaders if she won.

His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, reinforced his 2021 comment about "childless cat ladies" running the country, adding "I've got nothing against cats."

Trump positioned himself as a "protector" of women, declaring he would protect them "whether they like it or not."

Harris's campaign featured prominent female entertainers including Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey, aiming to appeal to conservative female voters.

Whilst Harris didn't explicitly campaign on potentially becoming America's first female president, she emphasised women's rights, particularly abortion access, as crucial campaign elements.

However, this strategy appeared insufficient in attracting enough moderate conservative women voters.

At a recent campaign event, former first lady Michelle Obama highlighted the apparent disparity in standards between the presidential candidates.

"We expect her to be intelligent and articulate, to have a clear set of policies, to never show too much anger, to prove time and time again that she belongs," she said of Harris.

"But for Trump, we expect nothing at all. No understanding of policy, no ability to put together a coherent argument, no honesty, no decency, no morals."
