As elections kicked off in the United States, Americans are bracing for a close contest between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. TOI's Aditi Prasad spoke to experts about Trump's prospects of returning to the Oval Office and becoming the 47th president of the United States.
When asked about Trump's chances of reclaiming the presidency and if any recent events have brought him back into the spotlight after Kamala Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic candidate, John Zogby, a pollster and author, said that while Kamala initially had momentum, two events shifted the course of the race. He said that there were two notable political stunts : Trump arriving at a campaign venue in a garbage truck dressed as a blue-collar worker, and another instance where he wore a McDonald’s apron and worked at the French fry station.
“The two political stunts the Trump campaign pulled off were fantastic and in the grand tradition of electioneering and campaigning,” Zogby said.
“The picture of Donald Trump in a McDonald’s apron, standing and waving to customers, is truly iconic and will outlast this election,” he added.
Zogby also mentioned the failed assassination attempt and Trump’s “fight, fight, fight” fist pump in front of an American flag, which became an iconic image.
Discussing Kamala Harris's decision to choose Tim Walz instead of Josh Shapiro as her running mate, election expert Vlada Galan remarked that Harris missed an opportunity by not naming the Pennsylvania governor, given the importance of that swing state to the overall race.
“Kamala’s choice to select Walz over Shapiro was surprising. Harris needs Pennsylvania, and she could have made a better choice,” Galan said.
When asked about factors that could hurt the Democrats and potentially benefit Trump, Galan pointed out Biden’s controversial comparison of Trump supporters to “garbage” after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s derogatory joke about Puerto Rico.
“This was an important moment in the race,” Galan said. She added that while it may not be a definitive turning point, it tipped the balance in Trump’s favor as election day approached. The combination of the garbage truck stunt and the McDonald’s incident contributed to Trump’s momentum, she said.
Regarding Harris’s potential weaknesses, Galan said Michelle Obama’s appeal to male voters, which underscored Harris’s struggles with this demographic. “Kamala is losing male voters, and that could make a difference,” she said.
