BENGALURU: A Bengaluru court on Saturday sentenced Congress' Karwar MLA, Satish Sail , and six others to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 44 crore in the Rs 250 crore Belekeri port iron ore theft and illegal export case. They have been sent to Bengaluru central prison.
The seven convicts - including Sail, owner of Mallikarjuna Shipping Pvt Ltd - must share the financial penalty equally, said Justice Santhosh Gajanan Bhat, special judge of Elected Representatives' Court. The court found them guilty on Thursday of theft and illegal export of iron ore from Belekeri port in Uttara Kannada between 2006-07 and 2010-11.
In addition to Sail, the court sentenced Mahesh Biliye, Kharadapudi Mahesh, KV Nagaraj, Prem Chand Garg, KV Govindaraju, and Chetan Shah. Biliye, former deputy conservator of the port, will also pay an additional penalty of Rs 7.2 lakh.
Meanwhile, former Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde, who initially investigated the scam before it was transferred to CBI, said that the conviction and sentencing send a strong message to all wrongdoers.
