MUMBAI: The annual post-monsoon runway maintenance work was successfully completed on Thursday, said the Mumbai airport operator.
The airport was shut for flights between 11 am and 5 pm to carry out the maintenance work on both its runways, 09/27 and 14/32. Flight operations began after the six hour closure.
"The annual post-monsoon maintenance routine is crucial for inspecting and addressing any surface degradation caused by the monsoon rains. During the maintenance, key activities included installing runway edge lights at the intersection of runway 14/32, clearing debris from underground ducts beneath runway 09-27, validating the strength of the Runway End Safety Area (RESA) for runways 09 and 27, and conducting extensive repair work at runway intersections," said Mumbai International Airport Ltd ( MIAL ).
"The team inspected over 5,000 aeronautical ground lights, drainage pits, chambers, and critical cables used for lighting, IT, and navigational aids. The engineering and airside teams inspected the runways for surface texture and signs of erosion, addressing all necessary repairs during the scheduled closure," it added.
A notice about the scheduled closure of runways for maintenance work was issued to airlines and other stake holders six months in advance, allowing flight timings to be adjusted in advance.
