Google launches Theft Detection Lock in Android 15: What is it, how it will make Android phones safe

Google has launched Android 15 . Among various other features, the company has highlighted a bunch of privacy and security-related tools. The company has highlighted the Theft Detection Lock that, currently rolled out to Pixel smartphones (Pixel 6 and above), will soon come to all those devices that will be upgraded to the newest version. It is another security feature that aims to keep user data safe.

What is Theft Detection Lock and how it works
Google says that Theft Detection Lock uses AI to help keep user data safe. If the phone senses someone has snatched it and is trying to run, bike or drive away, the feature will automatically kick in and lock the device. It is to be noted that the on which it is enabled must have a lock screen set.

“By using on-device machine learning, Theft Detection Lock is able to analyse various device signals to detect potential theft attempts. If the algorithm detects a potential theft attempt on your unlocked device, it locks your screen to keep thieves out,” Google explained.

Google says that this feature will be rolled out to as many Android devices as possible except the smartphones and tablets running Android Go, and wearables. Support may also vary by smartphone model but the company explains that it will be rolled out to 90% of active users worldwide.

Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock
In addition to Theft Detection Lock, there is another security feature – Offline Device Lock – that protects users if a thief tries to take the stolen device offline to extract data or avoid a remote wipe via Android’s Find My Device.

If an unlocked device goes offline for prolonged periods, this feature locks the screen to ensure the stolen phone can’t be used. Users can also use Remote Lock to quickly lock the device from any other device using phone number and a simple security check. These features are now available for most Android 10+ devices.

Android 15 also brings additional protections that prevent thieves from guessing passwords and accessing sensitive information on the stolen phone. For example, there are additional authentication requirements for settings changes that are usually targeted by thieves, like removing SIM or turning off Find My Device.

The feature will lock down the device if Android senses multiple failed attempts for apps and settings. These updates make it harder for thieves to reset and sell a stolen device.
