Will GTA 6 be Rockstar's last major game on this console generation?

Send Push
Rockstar Games is preparing for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 ( GTA 6 ) in 2025, and with its extensive development period, a lot of people wonder if this would be the studio's single large title prior to the arrival of the next generation of consoles. Considering Rockstar's past time span of years between large titles, and the growing sophistication of game development, the question now arises as to whether GTA 6 will be its last big thing for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Rockstar's lengthy development timeline suggests an extended wait for its next major release

Rockstar is famous for its long development periods, usually taking several years between releases. The time between GTA 5 (2013) and GTA 6 (2025) will be more than a decade, demonstrating how much time the company puts into each flagship title.

Following GTA 6, Rockstar's next huge project might not come until another seven to ten years, meaning its release will be well beyond the next console generation. At that point, the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox should be in their prime, reducing the chances that Rockstar would create another completely new, high-scale title for the existing hardware.

In addition to that, GTA 6 should be a growing game with periodic updates of its online component. If Rockstar repeats what they did in GTA Online, the majority of the attention of GTA 6 will still go to making GTA 6 continue being relevant for many years ahead rather than working on another major single-player title of the same generation.

What could be next for Rockstar's future projects?

While GTA 6 will be the studio’s biggest release, fans have also speculated about the possibility of Red Dead Redemption 3 or a new IP. However, with Rockstar’s development priorities, launching another massive open-world game before the next console generation seems unlikely.

Rather, Rockstar could publish remasters or enhanced versions of current games, as with the GTA Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. A next-gen redesign of Red Dead Redemption 2 or remake of Bully is possible, but an entirely new AAA game in the near future would be unexpected.

Given Rockstar's development schedule and its emphasis on long-term support for GTA 6, it is more than likely that this will be the company's final major release for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Smaller projects or remasters might be seen, but the next landmark Rockstar title will probably show up with the next console cycle.
