Travis Hunter's NFL Draft moment sparks outrage over father's court-approved appearance despite a criminal record

Send Push
Travis Hunter , the dynamic two-way football star from the Colorado Buffaloes and a projected top-five pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, is preparing for the biggest night of his life—but it’s his father’s presence that’s drawing headlines. Travis Hunter Sr. , who has been under home confinement due to serious legal troubles, has been granted rare court permission to attend the NFL Draft in Green Bay. The decision is stirring both public interest and debate.

Travis Hunter’s father granted exception despite criminal record
Hunter Sr., 39, is currently serving the first year of a three-year probation sentence after a 2023 arrest involving drug and firearm charges. Though he was released before the Heisman Trophy ceremony last year, he wasn’t allowed to travel to New York to witness his son’s crowning moment. That absence cast a shadow over the emotional evening, where Hunter Jr. used his speech to send a heartfelt message to his dad watching from home.

“I want to say something to my father,” Travis said onstage. “He's not here and wasn't able to make it but I know you're watching on TV. Dad, I love you... I did it for you, man.”

Now, under strict court supervision, the elder Hunter will travel from Florida to Wisconsin for a tightly monitored visit. He’ll be allowed to attend the draft at Lambeau Field but must remain confined to his hotel otherwise.

The court’s decision to allow Hunter Sr. to attend has prompted mixed reactions. For many, it’s a powerful moment of redemption and a chance for a father to support his son on a historic night. But for others, it raises concerns about setting precedent and the leniency shown in high-profile cases.

Shirley Hunter , Travis Sr.’s mother, expressed pride in seeing her son support his child in person. “I’d rather him be up there to be with his son than me,” she told reporters. “That’s his first son.”

As Travis Hunter takes the stage at the NFL Draft, he’ll do so not just as an elite athlete, but as the face of a family that’s endured setbacks, fought through adversity, and finally stood united under the spotlight. Whether controversial or heartwarming, this draft moment is undeniably unforgettable.
