Esa Lindell's defensive heroics: Dallas Stars defeat Colorado Avalanche

In the pandemonium of overtime during NHL playoffs , heroes do not always surface as sharpshooters who score the goal that clinches the game. More often than not, the silent defender makes those last-minute plays to keep the team alive. One of the finest such heroes in the lineup of the Dallas Stars is defenseman Esa Lindell , who gave his fans a glimpse in yet another match against the Colorado Avalanche at why he deserves far more recognition than he receives.

Soaring in the Cup as of now, the Stars have taken two games straight against the Colorado Avalanche in edge-of-the-seat overtime endings. But then, forward Tyler Seguin would steal the headlines to seal the win with a goal in extra time; that hard work was courtesy of Esa Lindell's relentless defense. Without those efforts, the Stars have probably never gotten to the moment of golden glory.

In an otherwise close playoff matchup, Lindell was a wall on the ice. With an almost open net awaiting the Avalanche to pull the trigger, Artturi Lehkonen fired a shot not even a minute into overtime when Lindell slid in just in time to deflect the instinctual, sacrificial move that ensured a tie. This was, however, not a one-off event. Earlier during overtime, Lindell had blocked another shot, and by the time Seguin scored, Lindell had blocked three shots and logged more than 27 minutes of ice time.

His performance may not be made known in the scoresheet in bold letters, but it did shape the match. For almost the entire game, the Stars trailed before finally equalizing late in the third period through Jamie Benn. However, it was Lindell's clutch defense during overtime that kept the Stars from possibly losing and brought some momentum back to Dallas.


In a postseason where every second counts and where narrowly avoiding error can mean the difference between moving on or going home, players like Lindell are worth their weight in gold. He miserably doesn't hit the headlines the same way scorers do, but he is the kind of player who wins gold--through tenacity, intelligence, and grit.
