Actor Jenna Ortega eats kiwi with skin on: US doctor explains why it is healthy

Jenna Ortega has done a lot of things that spark conversation, from starring in Wednesday to rocking red carpets with effortlessly cool fits. But her latest viral moment? Eating a kiwi. Not just any kiwi though, she eats it with the fuzzy skin still on.

Yep, you read that right. A video went viral few months before where she doesn’t bother peeling her kiwis. Instead, she bites right into them like an apple, furry exterior and all. Naturally, fans online lost their minds. Some called it “unhinged behavior,” while others defended her, saying the skin is packed with fiber and nutrients.

So, is she actually onto something? Nutritionists have long said kiwi skin is totally safe to eat. It contains loads of antioxidants, vitamin C, and even helps digestion thanks to all that roughage. The only catch is the texture. That fuzz can feel… let’s just say, not everyone’s cup of tea.

Ortega, though, seems unfazed. She’s always been pretty no-nonsense, and honestly, eating kiwi skin kind of fits her vibe. It’s practical, saves time, and technically healthier than peeling. Fans have even joked that this might be the most “Wednesday Addams” thing she’s ever done in real life.

Skin for the win
Recently, Dr. Joseph Salhab, US doctor commonly known as thestomachdoc, took to Instagram to share how eating kiwi with skin on is healthy. He explains: You’re leaving nutrients on the cutting board if you peel your kiwi. Eat it with the skin to get more vitamin C & E (liver support + antioxidants), plus folate, magnesium, vitamin B6, and ~50% more fiber.

Sleep tip: have 1–2 kiwis about 2 hours before bed — they naturally contain melatonin and can support better sleep quality.

Colon health: regular kiwi intake is linked with less oxidative DNA damage and faster transit, which may translate to a lower risk of colon cancer over time.

Constipation: as a GI doc, kiwi is one of my first-line food treatments — gentle, effective, and easy to add to yogurt.

Fuzzy texture not your thing? Wait until it’s softer/ripe, grab a smooth gold kiwi, or slice it and mix with yogurt.

"Disclaimer about allergies: Some people may be allergic to kiwi, which can cause itching, swelling, or trouble breathing. If you’ve had a reaction to kiwi, it’s best to avoid the skin and talk to your healthcare provider. Always wash the skin well before eating," he warns.
