Panaji: The possibility of light to moderate rain for at least a couple of days seems to have increased as a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada in Maharashtra and neighbouring areas, and two related systems extended over a few states.
The skies turned cloudy in the evening due to these systems. But no rain was recorded during the 24 hours till Monday morning despite a yellow alert — and possibility of scattered rain — issued by India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji.
On Monday, the meteorological centre extended the yellow alert — initially issued for March 31, April 1 and 2 — to April 3 as well. IMD has forecast fairly widespread rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 1 and 2) and scattered rainfall on April 3.
During the brisk rainfall recorded in a 24-hour phase till the morning of March 25, Dharbandora logged the highest of 26.8mm, Sanquelim 24.2mm, Valpoi 22.4mm, and Sanguem 18.2mm. Several other centres had recorded some amount of rain too.
With the rain, there is also a possibility of thunderstorms with winds gusting to 40-50km per hour.
The cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and neighbouring areas extended up to 1.5km above mean sea level on Monday. Above this circulation, a trough also extended from south Chhattisgarh to central Maharashtra across Vidarbha.
The third system was a north-south trough from the Marathwada cyclonic circulation to north Tamil Nadu across the interior areas of Karnataka.
