Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is actively advancing climate action through campaigns focused on cleaner air, water conservation, and urban greenery.
In a recent review, officials reported that 310 acres were planted using the Miyawaki method, known for creating dense, fast-growing forests.
In addition, afforestation is being undertaken on 32 acres under the state's Upvan Policy, which is expected to increase carbon dioxide absorption by nearly 30 times. These green initiatives are also supported through policies that promote sustainable practices in road construction, mechanical cleaning, biotreatment of waste, and solid waste management in urban areas.
To tackle plastic pollution—one of the most hazardous components of urban waste—the state has launched a campaign to construct roads using plastic waste. A target has been set to build approximately 1,500 kilometres of roads incorporating single-use plastic, which is expected to repurpose around 2,000 tonnes of waste. These plastic-mixed roads contribute to waste management and improve the durability and quality of road infrastructure.
Solar energy is being promoted through the installation of rooftop solar panels to address the urban heat island effect. As part of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, over one lakh rooftop solar systems were installed across the state. More than 11,500 new installations are being carried out monthly and daily. The state aims to install eight lakh solar rooftops by 2027.
Thanks to these comprehensive efforts, cities like Agra, Firozabad, Jhansi, and Rae Bareli have emerged as top performers nationally under the National Clean Air Programme , showcasing Uttar Pradesh's commitment to climate resilience and sustainable urban development , said an official.
