The Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Saturday morning in the North Side neighborhood. The incident follows an earlier shooting that left a 39-year-old victim injured.

Sequence of EventsThe victim was strolling in the 2600 block of North Farwell Avenue in West Rogers Park at around 9:35 a.m. The victim was shot in the shoulder by an armed attacker who came up behind them. Although the victim's injuries were severe, they have subsequently received treatment and been discharged from the hospital. The victim's gender and identity are yet unknown. Chicago Fire Department paramedics and CPD officers were on the scene quickly after the initial incident. The situation drastically worsened about twenty minutes later, at around 9:55 a.m. After coming out of an alley, the 23-year-old male suspect started shooting at the police and emergency personnel. Exchange of GunfireThe duration of the armed altercation was around two minutes. Officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire, according to police accounts. The responding officers quickly returned fire. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital after suffering several gunshot wounds. He was first described as being in critical condition. Surprisingly, no Chicago Fire Department personnel nor police officers reported being hurt during the event. A key component of the continuing inquiry is the police department's capacity to keep everyone safe throughout the incident. Ongoing InvestigationThe events of that morning are being thoroughly investigated by COPA and CPD. Their goal is to put together what happened before the shooting and how the officers responded. No new information on the suspect or any other case-related material has been made public as of yet.
