One walking trail in the UK offers the perfect mix of scenery and history. The 7-mile trail in Hampshire around Silchester leads to some of Britain's most remarkable Roman remains.

The village, home to the Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre, offers a rare glimpse into Roman Britain, with its walls described as the best-preserved town defences in the country. Once the bustling Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, Silchester has a history stretching back to the late 1st century BC, when it was the centre of the Iron Age Atrebates tribe.

Following the Roman conquest in AD 43, it developed into a major regional hub.

Unlike most Roman settlements, Silchester was never reoccupied after its abandonment in the 6th or 7th century, giving archaeologists an unusually complete picture of Roman urban life.

The circular walk around the site offers visitors the chance to follow the full circuit of the walls, explore the amphitheatre, and enjoy panoramic views of the Hampshire countryside. The site is open free of charge during daylight hours, and a nearby car park in Wall Lane (RG7 2HP) provides easy access, managed by Hampshire County Council.

Visitors are advised that parts of the footpaths can be uneven or muddy, especially after heavy rainfall, and areas around the amphitheatre may be unstable.

Dogs on leads are welcome, but walkers should be aware that the paths pass through grazing fields. Larger groups and school parties arriving by coach or minibus must contact the council in advance to arrange access.

Silchester's location also makes it a convenient base for further historical exploration.

Within a 50-minute drive, visitors can explore Farnham Castle, founded in 1138, the atmospheric ruins of Waverley Abbey by the River Wey, or the lakeside elegance of The Grange at Northington.
