Tenerife paraglider falls to his death as police launch investigation

A man has died after a paragliding trip over a hotspot in went tragically wrong this weekend. Emergency services rushed to the natural pools of Puerto de la Cruz on Saturday after reports that a paraglider had fallen from the sky into the water. Police, firefighters and maritime rescue workers were dispatched to the scene, where the man was rescued from the leisure complex and attempts were made to save his life.

Local officers were first to arrive and tried to resuscitate the paraglider before he was taken to the Puerto de la Cruz esplanade for further medical treatment. The man ultimately died from his injuries, with the Civil Guard confirming that an investigation was underway into the circumstances of the incident, The Mirror reports.

The tragedy reportedly unfolded at around 3.30pm on Saturday, May 31, with the paraglider plummeting into one of the Puerto de la Cruz's famous natural pools.

Maritime rescue workers arrived at the scene on a jet ski, but ended up drifting and it fell to the General Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) to rescue the man via helicopter.

It comes just days after the Spanish island was hit by another tragedy, when a boy died after suffering cardiac arrest from ingesting a large amount of water while swimming.

The four-year-old was pulled from a pool in the Golf del Sur, a private resort in southern Tenerife, by a private lifeguard on Thursday, May 22, and was found to be unresponsive.

Emergency services rushed to the area, but sadly it was too late and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
