Poundland is set to close another store for good within just weeks. The budget chain is shutting 68 shops across the UK, with a further 150 at risk of closure, as part of a restructuring plan which will result in around 1,000 job losses.
The branch on St George's Street in Canterbury, Kent, will close its doors on Wednesday, July 23. The store has been in operation for over 15 years but it has now been confirmed that it will shut for good. Disappointed customers have since reacted to the news and said the shop will be missed.
As reported by Birmingham Live, a Poundland spokesperson said: "We recently made it clear that over time, Poundland expects to have a store network of around 650-700 stores in the UK & Ireland compared to about 800 today.
"While that that remains a very sizeable number of stores, we know how disappointing it is for customers when a location like Canterbury closes. It goes without saying that we will formally consult with colleagues at the store and that work is underway."
One customer said: "Really sad to hear both our Poundland stores are closing, it's been my go to place for pet bits since we lost Wilko's. Absolutely wonderful staff in the High Street one, hope they all find alternative work soon."
A second added: "That's so rubbish, Poundland is such a gem, we don't really have any other shops like it in town."
It comes after Poundland's former owner, Polish firm Pepco, confirmed it had sold the brand to Gordon Brothers for a nominal sum. The global investment firm previously owned fashion label Laura Ashley.
Poundland sales have struggled in recent years. Pepco said the increased employer National Insurance contributions added further pressure to the business.
