Numerous streaming services are much cheaper than Netflix. That's exactly what we found when we looked at all of the major streaming services that show some of the most popular TV shows and movies from the last few years. Netflix has upped its prices for subscribers over the last few years and has gotten stricter about how accounts are shared. This has led some to look elsewhere for their streaming needs as more services become available.
There are more streaming services than ever available for UK households. In addition to the big names from America, such as Paramount and Amazon Prime, there are UK streaming services showing some of the best British dramas, comedies, and thrillers from the last few decades. So, we decided to look at all of them and work out which ones offered the best value for customers. And we were taken aback by how many were considerably cheaper than Netflix.
We have split the list into two: one ranking subscriptions without ads, and the other ranking subscriptions with ads. However, Apple TV+ only features on the first list, as its standard subscription automatically comes without ads.
Meanwhile, all Discovery+ content is shown with ads, so we have only included it on the second list. We looked at ten streaming services in total, ranking them from cheapest to most expensive for both lists.
Here are the cheapest ad-free streaming service subscriptions:
9. NOW TV - £15.99A Now TV entertainment subscription will set you back an eye-watering £15.99 per month. This is because the basic subscription, which includes ads, is £9.99 per month, and it costs an extra £6 boost per month to go ad-free.
While it comes in as the priciest, there are some of the best-reviewed shows of the last few years on there, including Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, The White Lotus and The Sopranos.
8. Netflix - £12.99A subscription to Netflix ad-free costs £12.99 per month, which puts it at the expensive end of the scale. However, according to product comparison site Finder, it is by far the most popular streaming service in the UK. In fact, a whopping three in five households in the country have a Netflix subscription.
That isn't all that surprising, considering the stand-out shows the streaming service produces. Just some of the big hitters include Bridgerton, Wednesday, Squid Game, The Fall, Stranger Things and the Emmy-winning Adolescence.
Amazon Prime Video costs £11.98 per month when you want to watch movies and TV shows without ads. The standard subscription costs £8.99, but to have it without ads, you have to pay an extra £2.99, bringing the total monthly cost to £11.98.
