ITV's Good Morning Britain halted for breaking news as show cuts to Downing Street

Good Morning Britain was interrupted this morning as the ITV show cut to Downing Street to share an important announcement from Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley were speaking to Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce in the studio when they suddenly cut to Downing Street's media room.

In a lengthy speech, the Labour leader set out a number of promises to the nation as he shared how the government plan to tackle new rules for migrants. He said that the UK plans to "take back control" of the borders and will crack down on the number of illegal immigrants coming into the country.

In his speech, Starmer said: "Migration is part of Britain's national story. We talked last week about the great rebuilding of this country after the war. Migrants were part of that and they make a massive contribution today. And you will never hear me denigrate that.

"But when people come to our country, they should also commit to integration, to learning our language. And our system should actively distinguish between those that do and those that don't. I think that's fair."

The Prime Minister continued as he passed the blame onto the former Tory government, saying: "The chaos of the previous government also changed the nature of immigration in this country. Fewer people who make a strong economic contribution, more who work in parts of our economy that put downward pressure on wages.

"So perhaps the biggest change in this White Paper is that we will finally honour what 'take back control meant' and begin to choose who comes here so that migration works for our national interest." He added: "It ends now. We will create a migration system that is controlled, selective, and fair."

Following the speech, while answering questions from the press, the Prime Minister did not answer a question on whether net migration would fall every year between now and the next election but said he wants to "get it down by the end of this Parliament".

Asked if net migration would fall every year, Sir said: "I'm promising it will fall significantly, and I do want to get it down by the end of this Parliament, significantly.

"That is what this plan is intended to achieve. This White Paper, these plans bring it back into control, make sure it's controlled, that it's selective, that we decide who comes to this country, and that it is fair, and that's what we will do.

"Significant reduction in immigration and, as I've indicated, if it becomes necessary to take further measures, then that's what we will do."
