Florian Wirtz has reportedly rejected an offer from and gone back on his word as a mega £126million transfer to Liverpool edges closer. The two clubs were thought to be leading the chase for the 22-year-old's signature after Manchester City pulled out of the running.
claim that there have been renewed talks between Bayern bosses and Wirtz, where the champions were informed that the Bayer Leverkusen star is leaning towards joining Liverpool if a fee can be agreed between clubs. However, Bayern bosses were 'convinced' that they had a commitment to sign Wirtz in 2026 if they could not reach a deal with Leverkusen this summer. But he has opted to head to Anfield instead.
Reds boss Arne Slot has not only been able to convince Wirtz to join after multiple conversations, but the Dutch coach has been impressed with the player and is looking forward to working closely with the versatile forward.
Liverpool are after the German outfit demanded £126m for his services, which would be a record sale and a British record signing.
Another small benefit in Wirtz's mind is the Reds' . He has already passed his medical and the pair can continue their strong relationship on Merseyside.
Bayern are already looking at alternatives, with claiming that Kaoru Mitoma and winger Rafael Leao are targets for the summer, as the club are of the opinion that Wirtz will most likely join Liverpool.
Slot's side are recruiting from a position of strength this summer as champions, with the head coach insisting that it would be "stupid" not to bolster the squad.
"[Manchester] City will probably strengthen the squad again, if the rumours are correct, Arsenal is planning the same, so it would be stupid if we are not looking at trying to strengthen the squad as well," he said.
"Again, I've said it many times, it's not that easy because this team has already won the league. So to find players that can strengthen us - that might not be that difficult - because there are certain players in the world where I think, 'if they would come, it would be nice'.
"But they're also playing at clubs where they don't want to leave. So there are not many that can strengthen us, but the few that are out there, we will try to get them. At this moment of time we're not sure if that's possible."
