Cyclone Dana Likely to Hit Odisha and West Bengal, the State on High Alert

A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to develop into a severe cyclonic storm, named Cyclone Dana, by October 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The storm is expected to reach the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal by Thursday, bringing heavy rains until Friday.

Odisha’s Director General of Police, Sudhansu Sekhar Sadangi, said that the police are fully prepared to handle the situation caused by Cyclone Dana. The IMD predicts that the cyclone will cross the coasts between Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal on the night of October 24 or early morning of October 25.

"We are awaiting the cyclone's path, whether it will hit Bangladesh or Odisha, and will act accordingly. Preparations are in place for now," Sadangi told reporters. He added that efforts are underway to bring back fishermen who have ventured into the sea and that more clarity on which districts will be affected will be available soon.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has assured the public that the state government is fully prepared to deal with any challenges Cyclone Dana may bring. "Zero casualties will be ensured. There is no need to panic. The government is fully prepared," Majhi said after a review meeting.

He added that 100% evacuation will be conducted in vulnerable areas, with teams from the NDRF, ODRAF, and Fire Services on standby. Cyclone shelters will be equipped with necessary supplies, and plans for early restoration of power, water, and communication services have been discussed. Hospitals will receive uninterrupted electricity, and steps are being taken to prevent hoarding or overcharging of essential goods.

Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo stated that various departments have been placed on high alert, and heavy rainfall is expected in the state. Kendrapara, Balasore, and Bhadrak are likely to be the most affected districts, with Jagatsinghpur, Puri, and Ganjam also expected to receive heavy rain.

"Preparations in energy and agriculture departments are in place, and necessary instructions have been given to concerned officers. Leaves have been canceled, and all officials are on high alert," said the deputy chief minister. He also emphasized that steps are being taken to manage waterlogging from the expected rainfall.
