Value Scope: Each way horseracing tips from Steve Jones for Saturday on ITV

Have a Jak attack in the Betfred Portland Handicap. This Doncaster sprint contest – run over 5f143y – favours those with solid 6f form rather than horses better suited to the minimum distance.

JAKAJARO (2.25) is pretty versatile and he has run well in some of the hottest handicaps of the season over both distances. He stayed on well into third behind Two Tribes in the 6f Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood and he put in another decent performance when third over 5f at Ascot last week.

Jamie Spencer, understandably, gave him a more prominent ride over the shorter trip but there’s little doubt he’s at his best when handled more patiently in big-field contests over further. Those tactics work well at this track and the former Champion Jockey has a good strike-rate at the Yorkshire course.

Robert Cowell’s speedster has plenty of class. He spent last season contesting Listed and Group races when trained in Ireland and his current yard has hit form. Have 2pts each-way at 14-1. Several bookies are paying out on six places.

We haven’t seen the best of POINT OF CONTACT (1.15) and Andrew Balding’s runner looks primed to strike in this 1m contest.

He’s only had six starts and he put in an excellent effort when fifth in a hot York handicap at the Ebor Meeting. His previous sixth at Glorious Goodwood was better than the bare form as he found all sorts of trouble. He’s well up to winning a race like this granted a bit more luck. Have 1pt each-way at 10-1. Sky Bet is paying five places.

FANTASY BELIEVER (4.50) doesn’t run much on turf these days but he’s won two of his last four races away from the all-weather. He was the only runner to make any impression from off the pace when third behind prolific winner Crowd Quake at Chepstow last month.

A slow start again compromised his chance when well beaten behind the same horse on the sand at Southwell three weeks later.

Those patient tactics are well suited to this course and distance. There should be a strong enough early pace to set it up for his style of racing and this 1m2f is his perfect distance. Have 1pt each-way at 9-1.
