Sir Chris Hoy's wife breaks silence on heartbreaking statement on terminal cancer diagnosis

Sir Chris Hoy's wife Sarra says she has been 'overwhelmed' by the support shown to the cycling legend since he revealed his cancer is terminal.

Hoy, a multiple Olympic gold medalist, opened up on his diagnosis before heading to the Paris games. More recently, though, .

The 48-year-old , but was still able to attend the Olympic Games over the summer. Since his more recent announcement, though, there has been a fresh outpouring of support.

amid media reports over his condition, saying "Hopefully the dust will have settled" by the time they return. In the meantime, Sarra has given thanks to those getting in touch in the light of the cycling legend's revelation.

"Completely overwhelmed by your kind, thoughtful and helpful messages," Sarra wrote on . "Many people say they don’t know what to say- that’s ok, you don’t need to have the words - just taking the time to message has been like a soothing balm to the soul. Thank you.

"I’ve been told that men seeking advice about prostate cancer is up seven fold and that Chris’s story is likely to save countless lives. This takes my breath away.

"Life is wonderful. We are excited about the future. We have so many more adventures planned…. And I am so fortunate to get to do it all with @chrishoy1 - the most incredible person I’ve ever met. Watching him on the at the weekend was like watching a masterclass in strength of character, dignity and humility. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- he truly is my real life superhero."

Hoy himself had earlier shared an update with ahead of the release of his book All That Matters: My Toughest Race Yet. “As unnatural as it feels, this is nature," he said. "You know, we were all born and we all die, and this is just part of the process.”

It was also confirmed that Hoy himself shared a positive message from the family's holiday.

He has been back on his bike during the trip, sharing a photo from the top of a hill. "Worth the effort for the view! Keep pushing," he wrote.

A number of sporting figures shared further messages of support following Sarra's latest update. "You are both superheroes" wrote rugby star George North, while Olympic cyclist Joanna Rowsell said: "Sending love to you all. So inspired by your positivity."
