Owing to continuous efforts and follow-ups by Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, the Maharashtra state cabinet has officially approved the establishment of a District and Additional Sessions Court as well as a Senior Civil Court in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The historic and long-awaited decision marks a major relief for the residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Rising Demand for Local Courts in Industrial Hub
Pimpri-Chinchwad, known for its industrial significance, has witnessed rapid growth and expansion over the years, with Ajit Pawar playing a pivotal role in its development. Until now, residents were forced to travel nearly 16 kilometers to Pune to attend to their criminal and civil cases. Given the increasing population, industrial development, traffic congestion, and the ever-growing number of court cases, Pawar had time and again emphasized the urgent need for local judicial infrastructure.
Fadnavis Cabinet Approves Proposal
Responding positively, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis granted cabinet approval for setting up the District and Sessions Court along with the Senior Civil Court in Pimpri-Chinchwad. As part of the proposal, a total of 54 new positions have been sanctioned — 26 posts for the District and Additional Sessions Court, 24 for the Senior Civil Court, and 4 for the Government Pleader’s office. A financial outlay of ₹4.30 crore has been approved for annual recurring expenses, along with ₹68 lakh in non-recurring costs — totaling ₹4.98 crore.
Interim Facilities to House New Courts
Currently, lower courts are functioning out of a municipal building owned by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The same facility will be used to house the newly approved courts. Additionally, 19 vacant residences in the Azmera Government Colony in Pimpri will be allocated for judges’ quarters.
Pawar: Citizens to Finally Get Local Access to Justice
Speaking on the development, Ajit Pawar said, “A fast-growing municipal corporation like Pimpri-Chinchwad urgently required its own District and Sessions Court. It is heartening to know that citizens will now be able to access justice locally without having to travel to Pune.”
