Lung Cancer Risk Factors: The risk of cancer is increasing rapidly all over the world, not only in adults or the elderly, but now children are also becoming its victims. In recent years, a rapid increase in cases of lung cancer has been reported. The risk of this cancer is being seen even more in men.
According to the data, in the year 2022, 2.5 million new cases of lung cancer were reported worldwide, and more than 1.8 million people died due to it. Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor, which is considered responsible for about 85% of lung cancer.

However, a recent report related to lung cancer has revealed some new and worrying things. The team of experts has said that smoking is not the only reason for the increasing cases of this cancer; the risk of lung cancer is also increasing rapidly due to increasing air pollution. Apart from this, studies have also cautioned about many other risk factors for this cancer.
Increasing risk of cancer in non-smokers
An international study conducted by the University of California, San Diego, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has found that cases of lung cancer are increasing rapidly even in non-smokers. This means that now cases of lung cancer are being seen even in those who do not smoke.
When the team studied to find out the reasons behind this, it was found that it could be directly related to air pollution and environmental factors.
The findings of this study, published in the journal Nature, are like a warning bell for global health policy and urban planning.
Air pollution and herbal medicines are also increasing the risk.
Scientists said that not only smoking, air pollution, and some traditional herbal medicines are also causing so much damage to the DNA of humans that tumors start forming in the lungs.
Mutations are being found in the lungs of people who have never smoked cigarettes, which can increase the risk of cancer. The special thing is that these mutations have been found in large quantities in people living in polluted environments.
Mutation refers to a permanent change in the DNA sequence (genetic code), which can give rise to many health problems.

Research revealed that aristolochic acid used in traditional Chinese medicines in Taiwan may also be associated with lung cancer. Scientists believe that the smoke of these medicines reaches the lungs through breathing and damages the DNA.
This report of the study is particularly worrying for India, where increasing air pollution has been a matter of serious concern. Here, people are forced to breathe in deadly pollution, which can significantly increase the risk of cancer in the future.

Risk is also increasing due to microplastics.
In another recent study related to this, a team of scientists has expressed concern that apart from smoking and air pollution, microplastics are also increasing the risk of lung cancer.
In a report published in Hazardous Materials, researchers from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, said that microplastics and nanoplastics can cause harmful changes in lung cells that are linked to the development of cancer. Rising plastic waste, along with rising air pollution, is increasing the risk of both cancers, which requires urgent action.
