The Genesis of BPL
Nambiar established BPL in 1963 during the Licence Raj, initially focusing on the production of hermetically sealed precision panel meters for the Indian defense forces. His vision led to the creation of the company's first manufacturing facility in Palakkad, Kerala, which later moved to Bengaluru. Under Nambiar's leadership, BPL expanded its product line to include color televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and other electronic devices, emerging as a major player in the market by the 1990s.
According to a Business Standard report, BPL, once a titan in the consumer electronics sector, faced significant decline due to internal strife and strategic missteps. At its height, the company was involved in a range of industries, including batteries, telephone equipment, and medical devices, holding over 15% market share in the television sector during the liberalization era when multinational firms entered India. However, a series of family disputes and poor financial management ultimately hindered its growth.
BPL's attempt to diversify into unrelated sectors contributed to its downfall. While diversification can be a growth strategy, BPL's ventures did not yield the expected returns. The competition from South Korean giants like LG and Samsung intensified, making it challenging for BPL to maintain its foothold in the market in 1991. By 2004, BPL faced serious financial difficulties alongside its partner Sanyo, culminating in a 2005 joint venture that involved transferring its color television business valued at $80 million.
The entry of multinational corporations brought new levels of competition, which BPL struggled to combat. Despite substantial investments in brand promotion and a favorable market environment, the company could not adapt to the evolving landscape. The combination of misaligned priorities and escalating competition led to a steady decline in its market presence.
Despite these hurdles, Nambiar's legacy remains impactful. He built a brand that not only became synonymous with quality in electronics but also played a crucial role in establishing manufacturing standards in India. His son, Ajit Nambiar, currently serves as Chairman and CEO of BPL, which continues to operate as a publicly listed company.
Prominent figures expressed their condolences following Nambiar's passing. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, former Union Minister and Nambiar's son-in-law, stated on X: “It is with great sadness that I inform you all about the passing away of my father-in-law TPG Nambiar... Recognition of a Pioneer
Nambiar’s contributions to manufacturing and innovation in India were significant. As told to Supriya Roy in TOI report, a close associate remarked, “He implemented Make in India way back in the 80s. The factories that produced BPL products were state of the art as good as the factories in Japan.”
BPL's success extended into international markets, with exports reaching western countries under its own brand.
