This Diwali season, Bollywood brings a dose of laughter and chills with Thamma, a horror-comedy starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. The film hit the theatres today (October 21) and it is one of the two major Hindi releases this festive weekend. While the story has been kept under wraps by the makers, early viewers who caught the first-day-first-show are already calling it a complete entertainer.

Produced by Maddock Films, Thamma marks the fifth instalment in the studio’s well-loved Horror-Comedy Universe, which earlier gave hits like Stree, Bhediya, Roohi, and Munjya. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the film expands the universe further by exploring a new branch of Indian folklore, this time, linked to vampire myths. Despite the supernatural backdrop, viewers say the film stays rooted in emotion and family-friendly fun, a formula that has often worked for Maddock’s past releases.

Soon after its release, social media began buzzing with reactions from moviegoers. Many took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their excitement, calling Thamma “a perfect Diwali watch.” One user described it as an engaging mix of “emotion, drama, and unpredictability,” noting that while the first half takes time to set up the story, the second half makes up for it with a gripping payoff. They appreciated the film’s fresh storytelling style and particularly praised Rashmika Mandanna for her “natural and heartfelt performance.”








Another moviegoer couldn’t stop praising the direction and performances, calling Thamma “a total crowd-pleaser.” They highlighted that every actor gave their best, with Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika delivering standout performances. The user even referred to the film as a “high-energy Diwali gift,” recommending audiences to watch it with family and friends.





One of them gave the film an impressive 4.5 stars, describing it as “a total entertainer blending humour, horror, and desi folklore.” The post applauded Ayushmann Khurrana for balancing comedy and fear with ease, while calling Nawazuddin Siddiqui “unpredictable and magnetic.” Paresh Rawal’s comic timing also drew special mention for bringing a lighter tone to the film’s spookier moments.

While trade experts expect an opening in the range of Rs 30–32 crore, slightly below last year’s festival blockbusters like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Returns, the strong word-of-mouth could help it pick up over the weekend.
