Mumbai Indians will face Punjab Kings in the Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 after registering a 20-run win against Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator at Mullanpur on Friday.
Chasing 229 runs to win, Gujarat Titans lost captain Shubman Gill in the first over. However, Sai Sudharsan played another innings of substance and scored 80 runs off just 49 balls, including 10 fours and a six. He was supported by Washington Sundar, who scored 48 runs off 24 balls, with five fours and three sixes. Kusal Mendis, replacing Buttler at 3, scored 20 runs before getting out hit wicket when he stepped on the stumps while attempting a shot of Mitchell Santner. Sherfane Rutherford tried to give a late fight but was dismissed for 24 runs off 15 balls. His wicket was the final nail in the coffin as the target proved to be a massive one as GT ended at 208/6 in 20 overs.
For MI, Jasprit Bumrah stood out with the ball with 1/27 in 4 overs, while the young Ashwani Kumar, who played as an impact sub, took 1 wicket for 29 runs in 3.3 overs.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians scored 228/5 on the back Rohit Sharma's 81 runs off 50 balls. Jonny Bairstow scored 47 runs off 22 balls and gave a great start to the innings. The duo scored 84 runs for the first wicket. The momentum was carried forward by Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 33 off 20 balls. However, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya finished with a flourish smashing 25 off 11 balls and 22 off nine balls, respectively. The two hit three sixes each.
MI will now face PBKS in qualifier 2 on Sunday, while GT's campaign comes to an end.
