Did US get a heads-up? White House breaks silence on Israel's retaliatory strikes against Iran

The White House confirmed on Friday that it was informed in advance about Israel's air strikes targeting military sites in Iran. These strikes were conducted in response to Iran's ballistic missile attack against Israel on October 1. The White House characterized these actions as an "exercise of self-defense."

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the developments surrounding the strikes and are monitoring the situation closely. According to a U.S. defense official, the United States was "informed beforehand and there is no U.S. involvement" in the Israeli operations. However, the official did not disclose how far in advance this information was communicated to U.S. authorities.

On Saturday, Israel carried out air strikes targeting military installations in Iran, citing "relentless attacks" from Iran and its proxies since October 7. Eyewitness accounts reported multiple powerful explosions heard in Tehran and the neighboring city of Karaj. Sean Savett, spokesman for the National Security Council, stated that these "targeted strikes on military targets" were a response to Iran's actions, reinforcing that they are an "exercise of self-defense."

The escalation in hostilities follows U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent visit to the Middle East. During this trip, he and other American officials urged Israel to exercise caution and avoid actions that could exacerbate regional tensions, specifically advising against any strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

The region is experiencing heightened tensions after Iran launched approximately 200 missiles toward Israeli military installations on October 1. This marked Iran's second direct attack on Israel within a six-month period, following Israel's elimination of senior Hezbollah leaders, an Iranian-backed militant group in Lebanon. The Iranian regime claimed these missile strikes targeted Israeli military facilities.

Hezbollah has since allied with Hamas, a Gaza-based Palestinian militant organization, following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In light of these developments, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement regarding their operations: "In response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the State of Israel – right now the Israel Defense Forces is conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran." The IDF added, "Our defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized. We will do whatever necessary to defend the State of Israel and the people of Israel."

Israeli military officials reiterated that their strikes aimed to counter attacks from Tehran and its proxies, which have included missile strikes launched from Iranian soil. They confirmed that the targeted operations did not include energy infrastructure or nuclear facilities. As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, anticipating potential further Israeli retaliation against Iran's ongoing threats.
