Ecommerce companies go big on gig hiring for festive play

New Delhi: Seasonal hiring by ecommerce companies is at a three-year high this festive period, driven by market leaders Amazon and Flipkart that are also onboarding far more female and differently abled temporary workers compared with the previous seasons.

Ecommerce hiring is creating half a million seasonal jobs this year, as per findings of CIEL HR shared exclusively with ET. Amazon India is hiring 35-40% more gig workers, while Flipkart has created double the number of jobs compared with 2024, executives at the companies said.

“This year’s festive hiring has been one of the highest in recent years for Flipkart,” said Aakriti Chandra, the Walmartowned company’s HR vicepresident for Ekart, Minutes, customer experience and recommerce. It is focused on inclusivity, as the firm welcomes more women and widens opportunities for people with disabilities, she said.

The platforms stepped up hiring as they seek to go deeper in markets that they already serve, as well as expand to smaller cities, said industry executives and HR experts. Also, after weak summer sales, they are preparing to make the most of the demand peak around festivals.

“We expect over 35% more jobs to be created this year compared to last year, making it the most active festive season in the last two years (2023 and 2024),” said CIEL HR chief executive Aditya Mishra. This momentum, Mishra said, is fuelled by buoyant consumer sentiment and the recent announcements on GST rationalisation by the government that is expected to boost demand by making prices cheaper across sectors.

Flipkart has generated more than 220,000 job opportunities this season compared with about 100,000 last year for the Big Billion Days sale event, the company announced this week.

Amazon India is hiring more than 150,000 seasonal and gig workers across its network of fulfilment centres, sort centres and last-mile delivery stations, the highest in three years and compared with 110,000 in 2024. This year, Amazon India said it has created opportunities for thousands of female associates as well as more than 2,000 people with disabilities on its network. “The combination of a muted summer sales period and early monsoons has led organisations across retail, ecommerce, logistics and quick commerce to fast track their seasonal hiring efforts, ensuring they are fully prepared ahead of the demand surge,” said Shilpa Subhaschandra, chief commercial officer, Operational Talent Solutions, at HR firm Randstad India.

KEY PROFILES

The profiles in demand include delivery riders, retail staff, warehouse associates, logistics coordinators and technology professionals.

Salaries in the sector this year are in the range of Rs 22,000-32,000 per month (including delivery incentives) for delivery staff, said Sudeep Sen, vice-president at staffing services firm GI Group Holding. Workers in retail are expected to get Rs 21,000-27,000 a month, while the pay for warehouse associates is estimated to be Rs 17,000-23,000, it said.

At Flipkart, seasonal jobs created this year will be in warehousing, delivery, team leads and customer experience verticals. Flipkart said it is expanding the logistics network to 650 festiveonly delivery hubs in tier-2 and 3 cities such as Siliguri, Kundli, Jakhar.
