Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again has taken a solid start at the box office and according to trade pundits, the film will open in the vicinity of Rs 40-45 crore in India.
I got a chance to watch the first show of Singham Again in the theatre and while I enjoyed the film, this statement comes with a big drawback.
Singham Again has some good elements with cameos and the Ramayan connection, but a movie that was supposed to be Rohit Shetty’s magnum opus doesn’t stand anywhere near it.
@ Jio Studios
The film ticks every box of a desi mass entertainer, but that also works against it as there are many things in the film, such as Singham’s entry, abrupt cuts, no context, and more which could not resonate with many people.
Let us talk about the points one by one:
1. Singham’s entry
While Rohit Shetty gave a grand seetimaar entry to every character, Singham’s first appearance appears very bland.
@ Jio Studios
I was expecting a huge action scene where Ajay Devgn would come out shooting guns from a Scorpio, but his character was revealed with a simple camera pan.
Even his first action scene was brief and had no logic, but let us talk about it in the next point.
2. Jacky Shroff’s arrest
Jackie Shroff plays Omar Hafeez in the film, who is the patriarch of the villainous family pitted against the cops but he gets arrested by Singham in the first ten minutes of the film in a hilarious way.
Here is how the sequence proceeds:
Spoilers AHEAD!
Singham is driving in the valleys of Kashmir when he is overtaken by a motorcycle rider.
The rider then calls terrorists who try to kill Singham but they are eventually killed by him.
Singham then decides to chase the biker and when he manages to catch him, we find out that it was actually Omar Hafeez in the helmet.
I am sure that Omar had a huge network and henchmen who could have done this job and not gotten caught in the act, but I guess Rohit Shetty had to do everything quickly.
The film could have started with a covert operation where Singham would have caught Omar based on the intel provided to him by the intelligence team. It would have made more sense and would have also given him a badass entry.
Singham with his son
We are showcased a boomer vs. Gen Z banter in this film but there are many scenes in the film that appear without any context.
For example, in one of the scenes, we see a party going on in the club where Singham appears out of the blue and takes away his son.
This scene had no context or logic in the plot and if it were edited out, it would have made no difference in the story.
There are many scenes like this in the movie that made no sense whatsoever.
Deepika’s cringe act
Deepika Padukone was massively trolled after the trailer release of Singham Again, because of her cringe-worthy acting and she has maintained that essence in the film.
@ Jio Studios
Her character, Shakti Shetty, tries hard to be massy and funny but fails miserably.
It feels as if Deepika was rehearsing lines for her character and Rohit Shetty shot her and used that footage in the film.
Salman Khan’s entry
Rohit Shetty had a chance to establish Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey with a massy entry and build intrigue for his upcoming movies in the cop universe, but his cameo was wasted!
Salman Khan appears like any other character and that 15-second scene barely generates curiosity.
Despite all these underwhelming aspects, if you will watch Singham Again on a single screen, then there are high chances that you will enjoy it.
But remember, this is a no-brainer entertainer and you will have to keep your wits aside if you want to board this wild ride.
