Liam Payne's mum was left feeling 'helpless' before singer's tragic death

Liam and Kate had been staying when he began experiencing agonising kidney pain. Speaking with the at the time, Karen opened up about the 'horrible situation' she found herself in - being more than 900 miles away from her beloved son in his hour of need.

Karen shared: "We are all worried sick about it but we just have to get on. It's horrible – him being all the way over there. He's in Milan and it sounds like he'll be there for a week. I feel helpless." She continued: "All we can really do is sit it out here and hope for the best. There is nothing we can do. We feel helpless. It's such a horrible situation and we just hope he's in the best place possible."

This came shortly after Liam was forced to cancel his South America tour due to a 'serious kidney infection'. Taking to at the time, Liam told fans: "It's something I wouldn't wish on anyone, and doctors' orders are that I now need to rest and recover. I was beyond excited to come play for you guys."

Liam had always been open about his health concerns, including his issues with alcohol and drugs. In May 2023, he revealed he had been sober for more than 100 days, and felt 'amazing'.

The popstar told iFL TV: "I'm sober now, over 100 days. I feel amazing, I feel really, really good and the support from the fans has been really, really good, so I'm super happy."

Now fans have turned their thoughts and sympathies to Liam's loved ones, with one neighbour telling reporters: "I think they left last night at around 12 pm. The parents aren't here. All I can say really is condolences to them."

Another said: "They were seen leaving in a hurry at around midnight last night but I'm not sure if they had bags. You can't imagine what they are going through. I know Liam liked to get back here when he could. They will be utterly heartbroken as they are very close."

Liam died instantly from multiple injuries including a fractured skull caused by his fall at the hotel where he'd reportedly checked in alone. City ambulance service provider spokesperson Alberto Crescenti said the star had fallen around 40 metres, sustaining 'severe injuries which were incompatible with life'.

He said: “The alarm was raised at 5.04 pm local time saying a person was lying in an internal patio at Casa Sur. At 5.11 pm an ambulance arrived and the man was certified dead.

"Afterwards we found out he had been a famous singer. Unfortunately, the injuries he had suffered as a result of the fall proved to be fatal. There was no possibility of resuscitating him."

, which local media sources report could take between 10 to 15 days.
