Liam Delap was sent off on his return to action as Chelsea saw off Wolves in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
Delap, who made his first appearance since August 30, was brought on with half an hour of normal time to go but picked up two yellow cards in quick succession as the Blues’ poor disciplinary record continued. There has been a red card in six of Chelsea’s last nine games in all competitions, and Delap is now suspended for the trip to Tottenham on Saturday.
Goals from Andrey Santos and Tyrique George early on put the Blues two to the good before Estevao Willian had Chelsea cruising at the half-time break. However, a fightback from Wolves in the second-half, courtesy of goals from Tolu Arokodare and David Moller Wolfe, meant there were some late nerves from a Chelsea perspective.
Jamie Gittens scored in the 90th minute to restore Chelsea’s two-goal lead but Moller Wolfe provided an instant reply. After Enzo Maresca made 10 changes, his Chelsea did not take long to take the lead, with Santos scoring his first goal for the club with a fine finish just five minutes in.
A cheap giveaway from Arokodare in his own half allowed Jamie Gittens to skip past one and tee up Santos, who drilled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. It took the visitors just 10 minutes to double their advantage. Gittens again the provider, this time setting up George for a tap-in.
Not long before half-time, things got even worse for the home side when Estevao dinked Jose Sa to make it three for the visitors. Fer Lopez received the ball from Sa, but took too long in possession and Santos robbed him before Estevao did the rest.
In the second-half, however, Chelsea gifted Wolves a route back into the game when Facundo Buonanotte gave away possession before Hwang Hee-Chan set up Arokodare for a fine finish. Wolves scored again on 73 minutes with Moller Wolfe firing into the bottom corner from a tight angle.
Gittens scored a beautiful goal moments after Delap was sent off for a second yellow card to restore Chelsea’s two-goal advantage, but Moller Wolfe went up the other end and halved the deficit again. Chelsea, though, managed to hold on to secure a place in December’s quarter-final. Here's how football.london rated the Chelsea players individually.
Filip Jorgensen - 6
Bit of a nervy start with the goalkeeper rushing out of his goal to try and deal with a cross but not making the desired connection. Similar to what we saw against Lincoln City in the last round. Couldn't do much about any of the goals.
Malo Gusto - 6
Was camped in Wolves' half at times. Didn't do a lot but the fact you didn't notice a defender is not always a bad thing. Off on 60 minutes.
Josh Acheampong - 7
Crucial interception at the near post on 36 minutes to cut out a cross from David Wolfe. Looked typically assured and confident in possession.
Tosin Adarabioyo - 5
Captain of the side in Enzo Fernandez and Reece James' absence. An easy first-half but called into action a lot more in the second. Would have liked to see him win more headers with constant balls in the box.
Jorrel Hato - 6
Good recovery run on 29 minutes to deny Wolves a decent opportunity. Passed it well throughout the tie.
Romeo Lavia - 7
Excellent play for George's goal. Faces the ball with his face to goal and manages to turn and squeeze it through a tiny gap to get his side up the pitch.
Andrey Santos - 9
What a start to the evening from Santos. The Brazilian's first goal for Chelsea and it was a fine finish into the bottom corner. Does brilliantly for Estevao's goal - winning the ball high up the pitch with a well timed press.
Estevao Willian - 8
A couple of early efforts from the edge of the box that didn't threaten. You could see he was desperate to score. That came not long before the half-time break, with a delicate dink getting the better of Sa, who came rushing out of his goal.
Facundo Buonanotte - 5
It was all positive as far as Buonanotte's performance goes up until the start of the second-half. The Argentine gave away possession far too easily and Wolves were clinical when it mattered.
Jamie Gittens - 9
Does really well for Santos' goal. Reads the game well, skips past one and provides the perfect pass to his teammate who did the rest. Does exceptionally well for George's goal as well, with the winger putting it on a plate for his attacking colleague. And the goal... wow. He had no right.
Tyrique George - 8
Doubles Chelsea's lead with a proper poacher's finish from close range. Great movement to get himself in the right place. Improving as a No.9 with each passing game.
Liam Delap (on for Estevao 60') - 2
Great to see him back on the pitch. For a matter of moments. Suspended for Spurs.
Marc Cucurella (on for Lavia 60') - 6
Came on in midfield. Brought some experience when Chelsea looked a tad rocked.
Enzo Fernandez (on for Gusto 60') - 6
A run out for Fernandez in midfield. Passed it well as Chelsea looked to see the game out.
Moises Caicedo (on for Buonanotte 85') - N/A
On to help see the game out.
